By the end of its first year it had 3,000 users, an impressive total for a kitchen-counter operation but hardly enough to take the world by storm.The tipping point came when Steve Wright mentioned the site on his top-rating Radio 2 show in the summer of 2001 and its popularity exploded.“I describe this period as both the best and worst of my life,” says Pankhurst.“On the positive side the site just didn’t stop growing and revenue was flowing — and we were having a fantastic time being interviewed on TV and radio nearly every other day.As we have seen, Facebook had launched a year earlier, joining others such as Bebo (launched in 2003) and later My Space (2005).
“But I also believed only a fraction of the brand’s potential had been monetised.”With the new man at the helm, Friends Reunited launched a dating service and Genes Reunited, which traces users’ ancestors, as well as expanding into CDs and books.
Realising the power of the internet, and a desire to find out what some of her old school friends were up to and whether they too had families — she came up with the idea of Friends Reunited.
“Myself and my business partner, Jason [Porter], both of us being [web] developers at the time, were looking for ideas to branch out on our own.
The way founder Steve Pankhurst tells it, the site was very much the result of a light-bulb moment over the kitchen table.
“In 1999, Julie, my wife was pregnant with our first child,” he wrote in a blog.“She had just used the internet to track down her long lost grandfather that she had never seen.
And this week came the news that Friends Reunited was to close down for good after its original founders, who had been drafted in to resuscitate the brand, failed to turn it round.
