Again, Frank Pachmayr was famous for his wood and stocking of fine rifles and shotguns.
The flor-de-lis carvings, stipling, and 32LPI checkering is extremely well done and identical to a factory A-1 Special.
There are date codes on the water table that indicate it was returned in January of 1942 for service or upgrades.
It was sold to me by an antique dealer in southern California, home of Pachmayr Gun Works.
I have seen many “reproduction” A-1’s and most are poor attempts to match the Parker originals.
I can only attribute the quality of work to the factory or someone as esteemed as Pachmayr. The LOP is 14 5/16” to the end of a (you guessed it) Pachmayr solid rubber pad from a mid position trigger, 1 ¾” drop at heel, 1 7/16 drop at comb for great shooting dimensions.
You may determine the year of manufacture in three ways.
Starting in 1917, serial numbers of all types, gauges, and grades are intermixed. Smith Gun Company (1946-50) started with FWS1 and ended with FWS 56800.Others have the suffix “R” (on both regular and featherweight frames). Serial numbers of guns produced by the Marlin Firearms Company (1968-71) had a prefix of FWM.You will need to know if the shotgun is pre-1913 or later gun because some of the early serial numbers were repeated in later years. The barrel is 30” factory, one of only 169 Single Barrel Traps so made, choked Full or .036 constriction, 99% blue, double ivory beads, jeweled barrel flats and lug, mirror bore, 2 ¾” chamber, everything like new.The receiver retains 98% case color that is still vivid and sure looks late “Remington” to me. The gold inlays are done to perfection, and closely resemble the inlays I have seen on other Pachmayr upgrades.
